St Joseph's Church

St Joseph's church is situated at a busy ring-road junction on the eastern outskirts of the city of Leicester and began in 1938 when people gathered for the celebration of mass on Christmas eve in a converted stable, the first church on this site.
The temporary second church was built in the 1950's with the intention of its becoming a parish hall when the third and present church was built in 1968. There are around 500 homes in the parish and until 2020 the people were served by two churches - St Joseph's church and Our Lady of the Rosary (now closed).

The Rosary Church has since been sold - read more . . . .

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

(Acts 2:42)

About our Streaming

Our streaming service offers:

  • mass streamed live on the internet
  • events streamed live from anywhere in the parish, in the country, in the world, direct to our YouTube channel - such our a walk with our parish pilgrimages - live from the grotto and Lourdes, St Peter's Square, etc. and school events
  • special occasions ie Baptisms, Weddings, First Holy Communions streamed live and also recorded for families to share later as a digital recording
  • ability for distant relatives and friends unable to travel to share in a loved one's funeral
  • individuals to personally make and share information in the form of small promotion films about charity work they are involved in, faith and work experience.
  • special services, music concerts, etc.

Streaming the parish mass began in 2017 primarily to enable the housebound of the parish, unable to attend in person, to share the prayer from within their home. In 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic closed our churches we found our service helped, not only the people of St Joseph's, but people from around the country and internationally. Our parish family has grown and continues to grow, introducing us to many new friends in Christ and new possibilities to sharing faith experiences.

We broadcast our streams through YouTube because it is free and the most accessible facility, especially in that it can be accessed on mobile phones, ipads, tablets, computers and the television.

Parish Administration

Money Matters

Our necessary parish expenses rely on donations from our community. Some prefer to give cash when they visit the church (the offertory collection) and others like to arrange regular payments through their bank. We like to encourage those who pay tax to Gift Aid their donation, as it enables the parish to claim 25p from the Government for every £1 donation that has been giftaided.

Safeguarding

Every Catholic parish has a safeguarding representative who has responsibility for promoting good and safe practices in all activities involving children, young people and adults and for providing advice on child and adult safeguarding matters within the Parish. Click on the above link for more details and contact details.

Volunteering

There are many ways to get involved in the mission and life of the parish. All regular volunteers are asked to complete the necessary volunteer application form and, where needed, attend training sessions, dependent on the role undertaken. If the position so requires (e.g. food hygiene) certification is through outside agencies. Some activities may require a DBS certification which we arrange through our Diocesan Safeguarding Office.

Register with Parish

Church is a community of people and the name given to the place where they gather. Parish is a territory, established by Church law regularly called 'Canon law'. We are free to attend any church, feeling part of the community wherever we go; but we are required by Church law to be registered in a parish, otherwise we cannot request Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage. Our Nottingham Diocese has forms to be completed by all who attend our church and these are available from the church or can be downloaded here.

Please complete a form for each family household, even if you have been coming to St Joseph’s all your life. It will be recorded and stored according to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) and you and your family will be officially registered. Until you complete and return that form no sacramental applications can be accepted.
